Tast Club, Palma Mallorca
If you are venturing to Palma Mallorca you must visit one of my most favourite restaurants.
In fact just jump on a plane and go just to have dinner.
It’s not Michelin Starred but I love it - it’s not only the fabulous food, excellent drinks and service but the understated cool interior. The whole package works and its not expensive.
First lets deal with the design - it works even without a stunning view or even any windows to speak of - almost private members club but not stuffy - there is just a whiff of exclusivity and its classy but not intimidating. There isn’t even a sign over the door let alone at the entrance to the alley where it’s to be found. Unpretentiousness that I love even though it happened to be designed by one of the top Spanish designers - Lazaro Rosa-Violan.
The team behind the attractive bar beneath the vaulted ceiling will deliver you brilliant G&T’s, cocktails, and in fact any drink they serve you is prepared with theatre and panache. For dining, you can eat in the bar but there are also a variety of different rooms - one with windows looking out to a closed patio that's filled with contemporary metal artworks - several wood panelled and one you walk through the glass wash to get to.
Chef Patxi Castllano has worked in several Tast Group properties and is responsible for the menu at Tast Club which includes its relatively new Colmado & Raw bar elements. ‘Colmado’ is the Spanish word for grocery store and Spain is renowned for high-quality canned seafood products and these are used in a number of dishes many of which I have tried - don’t be shy dig in. Marinated Mussels, Octopus, Sardinella & Squid are all delicious but ignoring the fear of offending a certain segment again the star of the section is the Foie Gras - Mi-Cuit Foie Slice.
The menu seems simple on the surface and is very much based on sharing an experience - some of the highlights include ‘jamón Ibérico de Bellota’, the Fine Crystal Bread, Artichokes with parmesan, Caprese with some of the best Buffalo Mozzarella you will taste but the star for me is their take on ‘Tortilla de Patata’ thin and silky and simply amazing!
Then there are the "main courses" Tuna, Octopus, Oxtail, Hamburger, Tripe Madrid Style, Beef Stroganoff, and Chateaubriand all feature.
No matter how simple the description trust the kitchen team - the Beef Stroganoff is the best I have had period, while the Oxtail is just as outstanding.
I have read that you should really save space for a dessert - i can’t comment as in all the times I have been I have never eaten a dessert - far too many nice savoury dishes for Samantha and I and everyone else we have taken to have any room left by that stage.
I highly recommend making a reservation if you want to eat here. There may not be a sign, but those in the know know and it is always buzzing.
It’s worth going to Palma just for Tast Club but if you do you will more than likely have some time before or after so keep the following on your radar:
Ginbo - excellent Gin Bar with excellent knowledgeable team
Tast - more casual tapas from the Tast family
Abaco - theatre or even opera the cocktails aren’t great but still worth venturing through the old wooden door
Arume Sushi Bar & DIm Sum - Santa Catalonia Food Market grab a seat at the counter and watch them make your order in front of your eyes
Cappuccino - All day food and drink Grand Cafe - consistently excellent and prefer the one by the Cathedral. N.B. they have opened a Hotel which we will try when we can.
Enjoy. When you go please let us know your thoughts - if you want more suggestions let us know and if you have any of your own recommendations please share those too.
