Lawyers, Accountants & many other jobs future are bleak.
Artificial Intelligence - do you think about it at all?
Probably not but might I suggest you do because it's going to change our world dramatically.
It hit me first while watching a podcast with Andrew Yang 2020 Democratic US Presidential Candidate. This was followed by listening to one of Sam Harris's podcast before reading 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari when I came across a section about Chess....
Deep Blue was the IBM computer that 1st beat Gary Kasparov in 1997 but December 7th 2017 ushered in a new dawn when Googles AlphaZero program beat Stockfish 8.
Stockfish 8 was 2016 world computer chess champion and had access to centuries of accumulated human chess experience and decades of chess experience - it was capable of calculating 70 million chess positions per second!
AlphaZero on the other hand can perform a mere 80,000 calculations per second and its human creators never taught it any chess strategies or opening moves.
It used the latest machine learning principals to learn by playing itself.
AlphaZero the novice then played 100 games against the grand master Stockfish 8. AlphaZero won 28 games and drew the other 72 - it didn't lose once which is remarkable in itself but....
How long did you think it took AlphaZero to prepare for the match against Stockfish 8?
Well it went from absolute zero to mastery in just 4 HOURS!
That is just a short example of the pace of AI learning and it is scary, especially when you realise the jobs that Automation; which includes both mechanised robots and artificially intelligent software programs; will put under threat in the future and it will not just be low wage ones.
Deloitte have estimated 39% of jobs in the legal sector will be automated
Other research has concluded that accountants have a 95% chance of losing their jobs to automation in the future.
Back in 2017 SAM (Semi Automated Mason) could lay 1,200 bricks per day, compare that to the 300 to 500 a human can do and that's 3 jobs gone.
A family farm in Germany was the first to install Voluntary Milking System robots that allow cows to walk up to the machines at their leisure when they want to be milked.
Uber is already testing autonomous vehicles in Singapore with the CEO have openly stated their service will be a lot more inexpensive and its profits greater "if you weren't paying for that other dude in the car".
Foxconn who make iPhones and X Boxes plus lots more replaced 60,000 workers with robots
Financial Analysts can't compete the the power and speed of AI and it is forecast that 30% of banking sector jobs will Want to add a caption to this image? Click the Settings icon. be lost
Progress over the last few years has been slower than it could be thanks to the availability of labour but reductions in immigration and financial pressures
will apply just the sort of pressure required to accelerate AI and a whole wide array of jobs will be defunct.
Escape the madness time I think - a glass of wine and a bite to eat at the pub with my lovely wife will be just the ticket!
